3 Levels of Sustainability Heroes

February 19th, 2009

Level 1 Sustainability Heroes know they should be doing more to build a more sustainable life for themselves, their family and future generations. Upon recognizing this they begin to take small, but very important actions like utilizing “10 Ways to Go Green” lists, conserving gasoline, using energy efficient light bulbs and even installing Energy Star rated appliances. Positive results can be generated as a Level 1 Sustainability Hero, but it requires education and consistent action.

In addition to going green in the more common ways like installing energy efficient appliances and purchasing environmentally friendly products, Level 2 Sustainability Heroes begin to address their energy use in a more dramatic way. By offsetting a portion of their fossil fuel based energy consumption with solar, geothermal or wind systems they begin to take more control over their spending and energy use by generating their own power.

Level 3 Sustainability Heroes realize that it is possible to generate nearly all of the energy needed to power their lives without sacrificing comfort or quality and in some cases create a surplus of energy that can actually make them money. Not only do they realize this, they create a plan and take massive action ultimately creating the most sustainable life possible for themselves, their family and generations to come.

Over the past several weeks I have been collecting information from AtisSun clients and other Maryland homeowners who have installed and are using renewable energy to power their homes. Solar PV (for electricity), solar water heaters, geothermal, etc…sharing_solarinfo Share Your Success

I’ll be posting this information in the Share Your Success category on this site. We will be covering what works, what doesn’t and what to expect when upgrading to solar energy and other systems. This information will be very helpful for those of you who have yet to make the switch.

If you are currently using renewable energy to power your home I would love to talk to you. Your personal experience could be very helpful to someone who is still on the fence about upgrading to a more sustainable lifestyle. Please contact me or leave a comment sharing your story.

The Basics of Geothermal

September 8th, 2008

ImageWith many people now focused on reducing their carbon footprint, there has been increasing interest in renewable energy.

The advantages of geothermal energy are many. Geothermal systems in run clean and there is little or no reliance on power from gas or electricity. Geothermal energy will help to significantly reduce your energy bills and there are no emissions.

Lower Your Energy Bills: Geothermal systems in the state of Maryland can reduce your energy costs by 30 to 50 percent.Image

Go Green: Ground-source heat is naturally renewable and non-polluting.

Lasts Longer: Geothermal systems have life spans of up to 30 years; ground loops may last up to 50 years.

One System: Geothermal systems provide both heating and cooling.

Design Options: Systems can be easily sized or expanded to fit building remodeling or additions.

Energy Efficiency: Geothermal heat pumps can move more than three units of heat energy for every one unit of electrical energy used to power the system.

Much Safer: No risk of gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning.
