SC Johnson, the company behind popular household brands like Windex®, Glade®, Pledge®, Raid®, Off® and Scrubbing Bubbles®, announced it will construct two wind turbines at its largest manufacturing plant in Waxdale, Wisconsin.

The turbines will begin generating energy for the plant by the end of the year.

The turbines are expected to produce about 8 million KWH of electricity annually–the amount needed to power 700 homes each year. The energy output of the wind turbines will also reduce the plant’s carbon emission by 6,000 metric tons each year.

SC Johnson management says this is a “visible symbol” of the continuing efforts made by the company to be environmentally responsible.

Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, is the fifth generation of the Johnson family to head-up the company. Over the last several years, the 126-year-old organization has focused on improving sustainability and decreasing waste.

Last year, SC Johnson received the Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Award recognizes companies for ”their commitment and contribution to the advancement of the nation’s voluntary green power market.”

“The wind turbines allow us to expand our use of green energy in manufacturing our products,” Fisk said in a press release. “When completed, the addition of these wind turbines will enable us generate on average 100 percent of our electrical energy on-site at Waxdale, with approximately 60 percent of it coming from renewable sources.”

In addition the wind turbines at the Waxdale plant, SC Johnson has also installed several SWIFT mini-wind turbines at locations around the country in the last couple of years, including 3 at its corporate headquarters in Racine, Wis.
