Hail to the Redskins! Washington franchise named Green Business of the Year
The Washington Redskins football team has been awarded Green Business of the Year by the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce. The franchise accepted the award at the Chamber’s 2012 Excellence in Business Award Gala on June 1st.
“We are honored to accept this award as the Green Business of the Year,” Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen said upon accepting the award. “We would like to thank NRG for their partnership and the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce for their continued support and recognition.”
The franchise installed more than 8,000 solar panels last year at its home stadium, FedEx Field.
Capable of generating two megawatts of clean electricity, FedEx Field is now the largest source of renewable energy in the region according to CBS News.
The panels were installed on a parking canopy, covering 850 parking spaces, and supply a portion of the massive complex’s game day energy demands. On non-game days, the panels often produce enough electricity to support the stadium’s needs entirely.
